Altun-Ha (which means petrified water) is about 50 kilometers north of Belize City and about 10 kilometers from the sea. This ceremonial and trade center was probably the most important link between the coast and the interior areas. There are more than 500 buildings in the center of the area. The entire city of Altun-Ha is about 5 square kilometers and contains about 250 to 300 unencumbered buildings. The Altun-Ha population is estimated at 9,000 to 12,000 people at its peak. In Altun-Ha a treasure of more than 300 jade objects was found, including the gracefully carved head of Kinisch Anau, the sun god of the Maya. This head, which weighs 4.5 kilos and is 15 centimeters high, is known as the largest by the Maya jade carved object. It is one of the symbols of Belize and is on every banknote
