Monkey River is a coastal watercourse in the south of Belize. Monkey River connects the Maya Mountains with the Caribbean Sea to Monkey River Town. Monkey River is one of the most important waterways of Belize. The northern part of the upper course of the Monkey River comes from the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. Further south (the underflow), the eastern slopes of the Maya Mountains, including the ancient Mayan areas (Lubaantun and Nim Li Punit), enter the water.

Navigating in the south of the Monkey River in Belize is easy. Throughout the year, small boats are sailed on. Navigation above the large confluence at the Swasey Bladen Forest Reserve is more difficult. This is due to lack of draft, especially when the dry season starts (around February).

Many animals have their habitat around Monkey River, such as the ocelot, jaguar, the Guatemala black howler monkey, bare-throated tiger heron, Morelet's crocodiles, fer-de-Lance, many species of birds and the manatee or manatee.

Boat trips along the Monkey River are an important part of the ecotourism of Belize for the south. Most travelers are from Placencia or Roberts Grove. The peninsula Palencia is located about 35 kilometers northeast of the mouth of the Monkey River. The best part is that you sail from Placencia with a boat along the coastline, which is fully grown with mangrove and mangrove islands. The small motorized boats usually stop at Monkey River Town for lunch. The boat trips on the Monkey River are about 10 km upstream from the mouth. The possibility is also offered to take a walk through the jungle. Insect repellent, closed shoes and long pants are absolutely necessary! A telephoto lens is absolutely recommended here, to be able to photograph all this beauty well.
