Tikal in Guatemala was discovered in the 18th century and has been excavated and studied since 1881. The total area of Tikal is enormous, over 576 km2 of which most and largest monuments are in the center of 1200 by 1600 meters. The first monarch in inscriptions from 200 b.c. is called, is Yax-Moch-Xok. The Maya considered him the forefather of the Tikal royal family. Around 250 a.c. Tikal had grown into a giant Maya city in Guatemala.
